Painting Chairs
Recently, I have been thinking about incorporating some text into paintings. I used to do it a lot years ago. I thought I might try it again but could not find my way into it. My friend suggested painting on the old chairs that are dotted around the studio. So here I am painting and writing on chairs.
It feels so liberating to get lost in this sort of stuff. I find that when I’m constantly painting there are occasions when the road can get a bit narrow. Messing around with these chairs is like releasing a pressure valve. It brings a level of play back into painting.
I wrote a Paul Éluard line on one of the chairs “The world is blue like an orange”. I might make a series of poetry chairs and have written my own chair poem to go with it. It’s about an antelope waking up in a chicken’s body. It’s called spring chicken.
